You can't help who you're attracted to, even if sometimes that person is your friend's ex. Though there are more than enough fish in the sea for you to date let's dig deeper. There are times where it is "okay" to date a friend's ex. You might have a friend that doesn't care if you date their ex because it was never a serious relationship.
When it comes to the question, "Can I date my friend's Ex?" here are 3 things to consider before diving in.
1. Question is it worth it to date my friend's ex?
I don’t know how deep your friendship is but there's a good chance if you date their ex you won't be friends anymore. If not at least for the sake they don't want to see their ex every time they hang with you. Now if you don’t care about the friendship than you're already dating their ex.
Even if you don't care about the friend remember that it can hurt your reputation. Other people may question motives and trust. Wondering if you would do the same to them. Especially if this is a trend with you. Some people are only attracted to what others have. Don’t be that person.
2. Think about the reason they broke up.
You know why your friend broke up with their ex. Consider those reasons when contemplating a relationship with the ex. Was it a bad breakup, amicable? If it was an emotional breakup there’s a good chance your friend will not be happy about you dating their ex. The reason they broke up should be a red flag for you. Since those same problems and issues are most likely going to pop up with you.
The exception to this is if a lot of time (years) has passed since your friend dated this person. Even then it takes a lot for a person to change. Make sure they've matured passed the problems they had before.
3. Talk to your friend.
If they're a true friend you owe it to them to clear the air. I’m not saying you’re asking for their permission. Chances are you've made your decision to date their ex. But if you do care about your friend's feelings you need to tell them. They deserve to hear the news from you instead of through rumors. You have to be okay with them hating your decision to date their ex. There is no convincing in this conversation. It’s about clearing the air. They're allowed to not be happy for you.
You have to use your best judgment when dating a friend’s ex. But know that your friendship with that person may never be the same. And it might lack the trust it once did. Make sure the person is worth it.
