5 Ways to Beat Loneliness While Staying at Home
Alone During Isolation How to Beat feelings of loneliness
A lot of Americans live alone. Which can make social distancing and isolation hard on mental health. We have to remember to check in on people during this time so that they know they’re not alone. Here are my tips on dealing with loneliness during isolation.
Foster an Animal
If you’re lucky to not be allergic to cats or dogs take this time to consider fostering an animal. It’s about to be high season for kittens so help out non-profits by bringing home an animal to care for. A lot of shelters have closed down overwhelming the rescues. This allows you to bond with an animal so you won’t feel alone. Plus there is no pressure to keep the cat or dog since you’re fostering them until they find their forever home. You’ll feel good for helping out and saving an animal’s life.
Reach out to friends.
Don’t feel like you have to tackle this alone. No one is too busy to talk especially your close friends. Everyone is at home and having weird feelings about what is going on. Reach out to them if you feel anxious. Chances are they'll be excited to hear from you.
Talk on the phone
Take it a step further when reaching out to family and friends and call them on the phone. There is a connection that when you hear someone’s voice versus text messages. Call friends and say hello.
Video dates and virtual happy hours.
If you beat loneliness by going out with friends you can still achieve that with virtual happy hours. Make it a habit to have one once a week until this whole event is over. You can play video games together or watch movies.
Self-care Self-Care Self-Care
This is a great time to tap into all those hobbies and projects that you always wanted to do but couldn’t find the time. It’s ambitious to tackle them all so pick your favorite. Meditate, yoga, at-home workouts. You want to make sure to practice self-care during this time. Which can be taking a hot bath or having a dance party in your room to some old school jams. Whatever brings you an ounce of peace is something you should do daily. Also make sure to breathe, take a walk or look outside your window once in a while.
If the above ideas don't help remember there are online resources for mental health. Where you can do online therapy sessions with a professional.
